QuestionI have just noticed on a relatively small tree (small in contrast to my large maple right next to it.) It was here when I bought the house eight years ago and it has red berries about 1/2". It the spring it has pink blossoms.) On the trunk of the tree, there are about five holes (almost looks like someone drilled on it. These holes are about 4" in diameter. These rings are all around the trunk. I know this message is hard to read, not in the order it should be but I'm hoping you can help me identify what this is because I don't want to lose my tree. If you need more info, I'll be glad to provide. My daughter thinks it is woodpeckers but I think these holes are just to large to be woodpeckers.
AnswerMartha:
Woodpeckers may indeed be a likely cause. Can you send me a photo of this area of the trunk with the holes? I can show your photo to some of my colleagues here. Be sure to review you photos on your computer to be sure they are in focus before you send them.
Thanks
Steve
