Question
tree damage
Can you help me identify what's hurting my tree and what I can do to repair the damage? Today is the firt time I noticed the damage after moving into the house in September. The holes go just as deep as the bark and start about a foot and a half above ground. The holes are about 1/2 a centimeter in diameter. The tree is about 16in in diameter. A picture is attached.
Thank you!
Katherine
AnswerKaterine:
This is bird damage- probably a yellow-bellied sapsucker- a type of woodpecker. These birds are usually drinking the sap. Using your computer, GOOGLE the name and see and read about them. These birds may be protected by law- check with your local authorities or the game and fish comission. We have 'em here too. Not much you can do. Some people may have success with a shiny pie pan hung in the tree to frighten them, but that is not consistent. Just be sure the tree is watered and fertilized appropriately.
