QuestionHi Sir: I have a Kumquat tree that I bought from Lowes Home Improvement Store about two years ago. I live in Chicago Area %26 last year during the Winter it bore fruit but this year after our summer starting in the Fall it started to drop some leaves %26 it didn't bear any fruit this Winter! I am concerned because it dropped some leaves in the fall then stopped %26 yesterday it dropped some more leaves. As you know Kumquat trees love the sun %26 warm temps. %26 I am wondering if it isn't adjusting to our temps. during the winter because of the lack of sun %26 being indoors all winter! It looks healthy still %26 the tree is about 50 pounds in its container. I use a fertilizer when I water %26 it gets enough of that %26 water so what is wrong with my Kumquat tree?
AnswerHi Shannon:
I do not think this is a potential disease or insect issue based on your description. It may very well be related to the environment and growing season length. I would suggest that you contact a local garden center (one that has been in business for several years and has trained personnel) to assist you with your concern. Leaf drop could be related to temperature extremes or soil moisture extremes. These trees can be sensitive to temp and water fluctuations- and this may account for the leaf drop. I think your question may be more of a horticulture related questions rather than a potential infectious disease.
