Waxleaf ligustrum

Question
QUESTION: I planted 10 waxleaf ligustrums about 5 years ago when we bought our house. They are out by the road and these kids keep coming on my property and pulling the foliage off the branches. My question is, will that kill the branches or will new foliage grow back on the branches being stripped? They are breaking off branches also and I'm worried sick about them! I'm sure come spring the blooms will be pulled off, too!! Thanks and sorry my question wasn't about a disease, but instead a pest!!

ANSWER: Michelle:
In my part of the world, these plants are very durable and can take a lot of abuse. Obviously, these plants have their limit- just like others.  A few branches here and there shouldn't be a big issue especially if they are being watered sufficiently. If numerous larger branches (larger than 3/4 inches) are broken, then enough of them may become an issue. Then it may be time to talk to some parents!!

QUESTION: What about the branches being stripped of their foliage? Will the foliage grow back on them or will the branches die? It's taken a couple of them a while to get established so they're still fairly small! Thanks again!!

ANSWER: Michelle:

They should releaf if the bark isn't damaged too extensively, especially if the damaged area doesn't surround the twigs to girdle them.

Your question made me have a flashback to my childhood with the "switch bush" my parents used on me more than once!!

QUESTION: Thank Gaaaaaawd!!! I think I was beginning to get an ulcer. I would LOVE to borrow your parents for just ONE day! LOL!! Thanks for your time!

Answer
Michelle:
Be careful what you wish for- ha ha.  My mother used the branches from a European privet to switch my bare legs. I can still remember..  To this day, if I see one of these "weeds", I'll stop the car and get out to personally do some real damage to these plants.  Maybe that is why I get some real strange looks.  This, by the way is not for publication ha-ha.  It is a real pleasure being able to get off the subject time to time and visiting with you.
