Question
Pin Oak
I have recently noticed that my 3 year old PIN Oak tree has a Some type of disease on its trunk. The area affected is about 12-18 inches long and is brown/rust in color and has eaten away the bark down to the white layer of the tree.
AnswerFrank:
Thanks for photo. This young tree looks like it was damaged by some physical means, like an abrasion or something else that knocked off the bark, exposing the underlying tissues. This wound is an open invitation to fungus and bacterial diseases. Unfortunately, no help for this tree other than good fertilization and water, but then even on down the road there will probably be problems. At this point, I would consider replacing it- then protecting the main stem from any chances of getting damaged like this in the future. Chances are that it will never be a strong and solid tree.
