sick Yucca plant

Question
Hi, This is a follow up to my previous questions about my Yucca. I'm in the middle of looking at the roots. It isn't at all as I expected. First, even thought he plant was in a huge pot, the roots were totally pot bound and the root ball is dry. I'm not sure if the roots look right or not. The roots have a red sheen to them and they aren't really soft and mushy, as I thought they'd be if they were rotting. Some are dry and dessicated. Is it possible I've actually been underwatering the plant? I'm worried that a proper investigation will require me to rip the roots apart. Is that what I should do? To remove as much of the soil as I can to get to the heart of the matter?

Also, you said the dusty film is young plant growth. Does that mean I should not wipe it off? It is sticky if I touch it, is that normal? I have another Yucca at work and it doesn't have anything like this sticky, dusty film.

Do you make house calls?
Thanks for your help.
Alissa

Alissa:
Good Morning! It's Sunday morning here.  House calls? WOW. I wish, however I am in Arkansas.

Sounds like the plant may have been pot bound if I understand you.  When you remove it, try to remove all of obvious dead portions and if the root ball is real tight, might consider "spreading" it out to loose it up a bit, repot in larger container (by 2-3" in diameter than current size), water until water comes out bottom of pot- wet soil good (needs a drain hole at the bottom), then leave it alone for awhile.  This white film is a bit puzzling. The only other thing may be insects causing this- but you had said there were none.

For the time being, I'd focus on removing the dead/shriveled roots, repotting in larger pot.  If you have a local garden center/nursery or even an agriculture office in your community, these folks may be a good resource and even be able to "make that house call".

I wish you were just around the corner rather than around the world.

Regards
Steve
