Question
Apple
Hi,
I moved in this new place and there's an apple tree in the yard. The apples are quite small and don't look too good, and neither do the leaves (See picture). I asked the previous owner of the place and he mentioned the fruits are usually good but he suspects this year it was excess rain that caused that. Any clue what kind of disease is it and how can I address it?
Much appreciated
AnswerFilip:
I do not recognize a disease from your image, however there appears to be some possible physical damage there- perhaps from birds and/or insects. Consider cutting into the fruit to look for worms etc. that may indicate insect damage.. I wasn't able to tell much from the leaf- since it is not clear focus. As with the fruit, I do not see a disease that I can recognize in the image. In my part of the world, the most common diseases are Apple Scab, Bitter Rot, and some Cedar-Apple Rust. Check out "Google Images" on your computer and enter those names and look at the various images to compare with your tree. You might want to consider visiting with your local garden center about some chemicals that may be helpful to spray with. Keep in mind that these chemicals do need to cover the entire tree, so if your tree is large, this will limit your capability.
Since this tree is "new" to you, consider also having a soil sample tested to be sure that the soil has all of the nutrients necessary for good development.
