lemon tree from seed

Question
QUESTION: I have grown a lemon tree from a seed. It is now about 5 years old and over 2 feet. Over the last year it has started loosing browning leaves at an alarming rate in the winter. Although the leaves have grown back this Summer (when outside in the sun)the brown spots on the sides of the leaves are still appearing. I have been told that I overwatered it during last winter and have been cautious ever since. In adition to the brown spots some of the leaves are curling on to themselves lenghwise.
Please HELP!!!!!!

ANSWER: Charlotte:
Glad to hear you've been successful at getting a lemon tree from seed- wow , you must be a patient person and on top of that- must have a green thumb also!!

Over=watering outside plants while on the inside is a big cause of root rot. Leaf loss and browning of the edges of the leaves with yellowing is an indication of root related problems. I usually water until it runs out the bottom, then let it dry down until the leaves look "wilty"- (is that a real word?). If possible lift plant and soil out of pot and take a look at the roots- should be creamy-white not dark brown or black- that color could indicate a problem. Yes, careful on the water.  Leaf curl- I am not sure about.  If you wish, send me a closeup photo of a few of these leaves. Review your image on your computer to be sure it is in focus-before sending.

Thanks for your note.

QUESTION: Thank you so much Steve.
Here is a picture of the little tree. On the left hand side you can see the brown spots and at the right hand side the curling leaves.
Thanks for your time and advice,
Cheers!

Answer
Hi Charlotte:
I don't recognize anything in particular that is associated with the spots. If they begin to spread, you might try removing those affected leaves, but it doesn't look too serious from your image.  The curled leaves may be again related to the soil conditions. Check inside the curl for any insects just to be sure.  The leaves look a bit pale- am I right? This may be a telltale sign of a soil thing again. Always be careful when watering plants that you bring indoors, they just don't need as much water as they did while being out on the patio or terrace.
