QuestionThe bark of my ten year old redbud seems to be shedding right at the base of the tree. I don't like the idea of a tree losing its bark. Is this a common problem with redbuds? Is it something to worry about?
AnswerPaul:
This may indicate possible insect or disease activity. You might consider scratching around in that area to check for any "sawdust" or wet areas where something may be "oozing" from the main stem. Try not to disturb things too much. If you see neither of these things and the tree has been leafing out well this past year, I would leave things as they are. Be sure to avoid any kinds of damage to the bark by string trimmers and lawnmowers--these things are usually a death sentence! Always be sure that it is being watered well, especially during hot ,windy days in the summer.
