QuestionIn July a 100 foot linden tree fell on my house. Now I look at my other trees differently. I have a large pin oak within 15-20 of the side of my house along a driveway. It has a lean and the bulk of its large limbs are on the side of the house. Some of these limbs are over the house (over 20 feet over. My tree man suggests trimming off the big limbs going in the direction of the house to rebalance the tree and reduce weight pulling in direction of the lean. Is that an adequate suggestion or or should I take the whole tree down? The tree is at least 50 years old--probably much older.
AnswerHoward:
I would suggest getting an assessment by a certified arborist. These folks are trained to evaluate and recognize tree hazards. Contact your city forester for this task-- and they don't have anything to sell you either. You should be able to find these folks in the telephone directory in city sections. You might start with your Parks and Recreation Depts.
