QuestionI have inherited two wall splayed pear trees each of a different variety but both of whom suffer from the same problem. The affected leaves have a bright orange, almost circular shaped ring with a dark centre. On the reverse of each leaf there is a raised circular cluster of pointed egg type fibres which are hard to the touch. I have looked at many items regarding diseases of pear tree leaves without success. Please can you help re:identifcation and treatment. Many thanks.
AnswerBeverly:
You are very welcome- glad I could help!! I am in Arkansas. Many of the these rust diseases have an alternate host plant- that is the fungus that causes this disease spends part of its life on the pear or apple tree and part of its life on another plant- sometimes a juniper/cedar (that is close by in distance).
Read this short bulletin that I wrote from homeowners on a similar rust disease that we have here in Arkansas. http://www.uaex.edu/Other_Areas/publications/PDF/FSA-7538.pdf
Beverly, you will need a free downloadable program (Adobe Reader)on your computer to open/read this bulletin. You can just "Google" Adobe Reader to get it free.
Have a great day. It is currently raining outside. We are over our yearly allotment by 12 inches so far. Almost getting "web feet" as I write this ha-ha.
