QuestionI live in Punta Gorda and have 3 foxtails that have been in the ground about 2 years. They all were damaged by the frost but are still alive and trying to live. The largest was doing the best job of surviving but now that the rainy season is here I have noticed the fronds drying up on the tips. Could this be from too much rain? and if so...will time and the dry season coming soon take care of the problem or do I need to do something?
AnswerHi Mable, NOT ENOUGH WATER. If you don't provide your palm tree with enough water, the tips of the leaves will start turning brown. Most of the palm trees like MOIST and WELL DRAINED soil. To find out if your palm tree is getting enough water, check the moist level of the soil the next day after watering. The soil should be moist down to the root of the palm tree.
Palms damaged by cold can still show symptoms six months to a year
following a freeze. If leaves coming out during the spring and summer
appear mis-shaped, browned or otherwise abnormal, this may be a sign of
damage that happened during the freeze. Usually the palm will grow out of
this in a year. Sometimes the palm loses its ability to take up water. If
there is a sudden collapse of the fronds in the crown during the first hot days
of spring or summer the palm may die. There is nothing that can be done to
save a palm that can no longer 揹rink?up water. kathy
