Eugenia shrubs

Question
Hello.  I have about 20 Eugenia shrubs that were planted back in mid-June of this year.  None showed any outward signs of disease or pests.  About a week ago I noticed that all of them had several dead branches (brown and dry), mostly originating from the center of the plants and spreading to the tops of them where the new growth is.  The new growth would then turn yellow and finally brown, dying off.  Any idea what could be causing this?  I was told by an acquaintance that the problem is most likely fungus.  If so, what is the most effective treatment for this, and are the plants recoverable once they've been infected?  Thank you!

Answer
Laura:
I do not suspect a bona fide infectious disease here because of the pattern. I would lean toward the problem originating from the roots/soil related to an unfavorable environmental stress- perhaps transplant shock.  Be sure they are being watered well , but not to an excess. Prune out the dead portions.  You did not indicate where you lived, but you may wish to consider contacting your local garden center/nursery where you purchased them from to get their suggestions OR better yet, contact your local county Agricultural Extension office.  In many cases someone may be able to make a house call to see your plants and advise. Your plant symptoms can fit several things- best to have someone actually see some of these plants.  They may be able to ID the source of the problem.

Regards
Steve
