And this past June here in New York we had an entire month of rain, since then the trees leaves have curled up. What could this be from?? I don't want to lose this tree! Please help!!
AnswerLynette:
Wet/poorly drained soil can create a serious stress condition than can lead to root rots from which we might expect to see leaf yellowing and premature leaf drop as a result. Best to plant in fall or early spring when the tree is "sleeping". Water is critical during those early months- too much or not enough can be detrimental. Examine the trunk base for any apparent physical damage to bark. Bark damage can indicate wounding that can be serious as well. Also scratch some of the smaller twigs with curling leaves. If the tissue beneath is green, it may re-leaf. I'd just keep an eye out and if it does indeed die, consider replacement into a well drained area this coming fall or spring. Be sure to avoid any kinds of wounds, since these areas invite bugs and diseases.
I wish there was a magic bullet, but unfortunately they do not exist.
