Plum Tree Mould

Question
Hi, our plum tree is covered in fruit but some of the plums have a creamy circular type mould growing on them, which spreads to the surrounding fruit causing them to shrivel up and go black, we have removed as many of the rotten fruit as we can, have you any idea what the problem is and how we can treat it? thanks

Answer
Shaz:
Take a look at "Brown Rot" on Google Images and see if this looks similar to your situation.  This is a disease of stone fruits that causes them to shrivel. Good sanitation is helpful, especially just before spring arrives- go in and remove the dead fruit from beneath the tree and within tree is helpful. Prune out any dead portions of the branches before spring also. Several fungicides available for brown rot, but timing of application is important.
