QuestionI have a two year old Crepe Myrtle and the plant was healthy until about two weeks ago when I noticed the leaves in the center being yellow and falling off, in the last week the condition has worsened and more leaves are yellow and falling off. I thought I had over watered it but even after reducing the watering the condition has not improved.
Sincerely,
Irene PIke
AnswerIrene:
If those red/yellow leaves have some small black spots or blotches on them, then it may be a common leaf spot called Cercospora Leaf Spot. Check "Google Images" and take a look to see if this is what you have. If so, for this year, just be sure to rake up/discard all of the leaves that fall- then you can spray for the spot starting in the spring of next year w/ a fungicide called Spectracide Immunox or Fertilome Liquid Systemic Fungicide. It will need to be sprayed for the first time as soon as new leaves start to come out, then about every 10 days (read label)for 4-5 times according to label. Also be sure that your plant does not get too thirsty during the hot/dry summer- that can cause some yellowing and leaf drop also.
Hope this helps. Crapemyrtles are one of the most common landscape plants here- Too bad they are most often pruned improperly (CrapeMurder!!)
