magnolia tree disease / insect

Question

magnolia
Hi,  I saw a similar question about white blotches on the stems of a magnolia tree in PA. You mentioned it may be insects but required a picture. I attached a picture. Can you tell me what it is and how to treat it? The tree also seems to have sap or sticky stuff and I have an identical tree with no sticky stuff or white bloches.

Answer
Karen:
The white "bumps" on the wood looks like a type of scale insect.  On the leaf- possible woolly aphids.  Both of these critters produce a sticky "honeydew" that drips down on the leaves- making them shiny and leads to sooty mold- that black covering that we see on gardenias/dogwood/euonymous.  Scale insects make their living by sucking plant juices.
