QuestionI have a weeping willow that has been infected with black canker disease. The tree company that diagnosed the problem is asking for $1100 for a comprehensive treatment. Is there a cheaper treatment that I can do it myself.
AnswerNats:
It sounds like a disease that we see here. In my area,it causes the ends of the small branches to turn black and fall off. I have never seen it jeopardize the overall health of the tree. These trees here do not seem to be bothered too much- at least warrant treatment (if indeed it is the same disease I am thinking of). Any time you have a canker type disease, chemical treatments are not nearly as effective as selectively pruning (removal) of the infected portions from the tree. Be wary of the sales pitch. Get an accurate diagnosis first--
Just good watering regimes to minimize water stress and appropriate fertilization (based on a recent soil test) is among the best things you can do.
