QuestionI have a very old crape myrtle which has a sticky residue over the entire plant with a few what looks like aphids on the leaves also. My entire car is covered in this residue 2 morning in a row now since I part beside it. I have never had this problem before and have lived here over 30 years.
AnswerGreta:
This sticky/shiny stuff is called honeydew and is insect "poop". Aphids and a few other insect eat more than they can digest and it just squirts out their rear end, landing on whatever is below. Insect management is the solution. Look at an insecticide called BAYER TREE AND SHRUB INSECT CONTROL at many box stores and nurseries. It contains imidiachloripid and is applied to the soil. No disease here- just a common insect problem that we see on crapemyrtles--sometimes it results in the leaves getting black (sooty mold).
