QuestionHi Dr. Vann,
I think I have a serious case of aphid infestation. I haven't noticed any plants dying(yet) but my hostas, peonies and all other leaves in my garden bed are covered with clear sticky stuff. The big Linden tree overhanging my bed and even my patio is covered with ick. What are my options? (I don't think hosing the tree down will work as it is a very large tree).
Thanks in advance for your advice!
Debra
AnswerDeb:
The sticky/shiny stuff is honeydew or insect "poop". Aphids are notorious for producing this stuff. (park your car under a pecan tree sometime and witness that black sooty mold on the roof. Aphids and a few other insects eat more than they can digest and it just squirts out their rear, landing on plants below. It may be difficult or impractical to control them on a large tree- usually other insects prey on them, keeping their populations under management. You might like to look into an insecticide called BAYER TREE AND SHRUB INSECT CONTROL- found at many box stores- check out the label.
