Cucumber Problems

Question

Cucumber Disease
Dr. Vann,
We have been having white/brown spots on our cucumber plant leaves for the last two years.  They eventually spread to other leaves, stunt the vines and fruit.  We have tried sevin and rotenone with little results.  In researching your past answers, we can't decide if this is a fungus or insect infestation.
Comments?
Thanks

Answer
David:
I would be very suspicious of a plant disease- probably a disease called Target spot or a second possibility is Anthracnose. Both of these diseases are caused by a fungus. For these types of diseases, keeping the leaves dry is helpful. Best to water from below. If you water above, best to do it in the morning so leaves dry off asap. Splashing water can spread this disease to other leaves.  You can spray the plant with a fungicide that has chlorothalonil in it. Example product called DACONIL or Fertilome MultiPurpose fungicide. Follow label. Needs about 2 hrs to dry on leaves.  If feasible remove spotted leaves before you spray.

P.S. Thnx for pic.

Steve
