weird pattern like holes in a willow tree

Question

willow tree
my parents bought a willow tree and about a year ago and now it has these funny hole like patterns that are kind of shaped like little retangles???? my mom is afraid it is going to kill the tree.... what is wrong with it???

Answer
These are hole made by a bird called a sap sucker. Sapsuckers will make the holes and the sap oozes out attracting insects the bird returns to eat the insects. Scaring the bird off will usually work but if you spray an insecticide on the area this will kill any insects and the bird will not come back. You can use almost any insecticide on the trunk--Raid ant killer will do the trick.

These holes will not cause any real health problems for the tree.
