QuestionI have a young gingo tree and some type black fungus is developing on the
leaves. It's possibly some type of fungus. What can I do to same the tree?
What is the cause?
Thanks,
Dewey
AnswerDewey:
If this black covering rubs off with a wet paper towel or wet finger, then it is sooty mold. Sooty mold is a group of fungi that grows on the sugary excretement (poop) of insects. Sooty mold does not cause disease- an insect infestation is the underlying problem.
Google an image of sooty mold to see if this is what you have. You can also attach a jpeg closeup of a few leaves and I will take a look.
Thanks for your inquiry!
