black walnut trees

Question
Hey,
I have some land in south Al. that was once pine tree land , resently we cleared the pines off of a portion to build a house, we planted 3 blk. walnut trees, from a local nursery a few of months ago and I noticed over the weekend that one of the trees has pink/peach colored spots on it, these are young trees, somewhere in the 7 to 9 yrs age group, and at a $100 a piece I'd like not to have to rebuy or replant any of them, can you help me? as you probably know there is not a lot of info on things that can go wrong with a blk walnut in so. al. on-line.
Thank you in advance for any info. you can supply. On these trees.

Answer
If these spots are on the leaves it sounds like one of the leaf spot fungi on maybe a insect gall. Neither will damage the health of the tree. The worst that could happen would be you might lose some of the leaves prematurely but it should not have any effect on the trees health. Leaf spots are common on pecan and walnut and there is not any real reason to control them or be overly concerned about them. Here is a web link to information on Insects and diseases of Black Walnut. http://www.na.fs.fed.us/SPFO/pubs/howtos/ht_walnut/cover.htm

If you still have concerns I would call the local office of the Alabama Forestry Commission and ask one of their Foresters to come take a look. If they can not help they should be able to get you in touch with some one who can.  You can tell them I sent you--I retired from that organization a few years ago.
