Question
QUESTION: This is the second year we are seeing signs of an aphid infestation on our large (70 feet?) Tulip Poplar tree.  Last year was the first year in our house and we noticed aphids at the end of June. The 'sticky' mess was so bad we had to move all of our patio furniture away and tried to rid the aphids with spraying water, neem oil, lady bugs and finally tried a systemic that was supposed to work for 10 months.  We re-applied the systemic in May this year, but already we are seeing the Aphids back.  So far, they are not as bad as last year, but I fear they will quickly become worse as July approaches.

How can we get rid of the aphids and prevent the re-emergence each year?  This is difficult because the tree is so large we can't apply anything up high.  We are about ready to cut down the large tree.

ANSWER: I am not sure how a systemic pesticide will help a topical insect.  The aphids are feeding on the tree and leaves due to stress, heat, excessive moisture etc.  Unless you have a helicopter to apply the product I just dont know what to tell you.

QUESTION: Thank you for your information.  Are you saying that even though the aphids feed on the leaves, the systemic will not kill them?  I believe it works on roses, etc. but perhaps this tree is too big.

Will applying a neem oil or other horticultural oil on the leaves be a better solution?  

I have read that aphids are very common on this type of tree and there are many trees infected in our neighborhood, although there are some that are aphid-free.  Our tree does not appear to be stressed, but the aphids like it none-the-less.

I would love to recommend a systemic but the pesticide will only make your tree weaker and next year you will have an even bigger problem.  Your tree is sending out stress signals that insects pick up on.  If there are other trees in the neighborhood are infested too than its probably due to extreme weather.

There is a all natural product that will increase the health of the tree and it is systemic and applied through the root system similar to a micorizzal.  You will have to expose the roots at the bottom of the tree and pour it all over the base of the tree and roots.  This product will change the brix in the tree and make it unpalatable to the insects.
