strange change in elm

Question
QUESTION: The elm tree in my yard has developed baseball sized "wads" of deformed leaves covered with something white. In addition the unaffected leaves have 1/2" projections, from 1 to 10 per leaf, sticking out - they are green and look like worms but are part of the leaf.
If this doesn't ring a bell I will send photo.

ANSWER: wow, this sounds scary! I would love to see a picture. I would assume this is some type of fungal infection, and the projections you are seeing are the hyphae and fruiting body of this fungus. I would spray a fungicide to protect the remaining uninfected leaves if there are any.

QUESTION: Jenna,
Here are photos, leaves showing "wormy" projections and the wads of deformed leaves.
Thanks for your help,
Edy

Answer
Edy,
Unfortunately I do not know for certain what is causing this. Although I am fairly certain this is a fungal infection. There is an extension service for your county that you can take a sample to and they can either identify the problem or send it to a lab to be diagnosed. Hopefully warmer, dryer weather in the summer months will suppress this problem. Sorry I can't help any further!
