QuestionWe have a young Silver Leaf Maple that has not leafed out so far this year. New Sprout's with leaves keeping coming up around the base, but not on the tree itself. The limbs do not appear to be brittle, but I am worried since it is now June 8th and it is a naked tree. Is there anything I can do.
AnswerYour tree is most likely throwing up these shoots from the base because it is rapidly trying to regain a leaf canopy to sustain itself with adequate food. I would suspect the top portion of your tree which is bare, will not leaf out and will eventually turn brown and brittle. If the tree has significant value to you, cut off the portion which has not leafed out and allow these shoots to mature and fill in. This will result in a bushy looking tree and if this is not the effect you are looking for, I would suggest taking it out and planting a new tree.
