Question
Bark
Hello I just noticed something dark growing on the bark of my tree. I don't know what it is and I am not sure about the type of tree that I have. I'm just worried about the tree and want to see if it's something that I might be able to amend.
AnswerLooks like damage from a primary insect probably a wood boring Beetle. You may see sawdust around the wound. The reason it has turned dark is because the wound got infected with a fungus or mold and it may actually start manifesting into a larger growth.
This will weaken your tree. The tree will send stress signals and then you will most likely get an infestation of more Beetles.
You need to disinfect these areas. You could use hydrogen peroxide mixed with water or ammonia.
I would suggest a 10-10-10 time released fertilizer from the trunk out to the drip line. Dont over fertilize.
Good Luck
