Question
Lacy Bark Elm
Our young Lacy Bark Elm has been growing wonderfully, in the last few days however the whole top appears to have died. Leaves on lower branches are still green.
It is a new tree we put in. We live in an area that was affected by the storm surge of Hurricanes Rita and Ike. Southwest Louisiana
Do you have any idea if we can save it or will have to replace it.
AnswerLooks like the tag is still on the tree. I would take it back to the nursery and ask for a replacement--a tree that dies this fast had to have had something wrong with it when you bought it. Most nurseries will replace tree that die soon after they are bought. Do not think it is a disease or insect problem either the tree was not handled right or not planted right or was damaged before you bought it.
When you get another tree dig the hole twice the size of the roots ball and as deep and fill with good top soil or potting soil and mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch *pine straw is good) not pile up on the trunk.
