I would like to know how to rid a euonymus plant of white scale on the stems.The plant is several years old, and the foliage appears quite lush and healthy. Can you direct me to information about this disease of plants in order that I might be better informed, and hopefully avoid this problem in future?

The scale is attracted to your plant due to stress from any number of things.  It sounds like it is reproducing and will become a full fledge infestation soon.

There are products that will kill the insects and eventually they may or may not fall off.  And there is no guarantee that they will not come back.
