AnswerIn will depend on the location, tree species, density of the planting and the product.
Location--in warmer climates trees will reach merchantable size in as little as ten years but in colder climates it may take 20 years to reach the same size.
Tree species--trees grow at different rates evergreens far the most part will out grow hardwoods on the same site. Tree species will grow on different soils and depending on the soil they will grow slower or faster.
Density of planting-if tree are planted dense their size at least diameter will be less than if they were plant further apart. A soil type will only support so much wood and this wood can be in many small trees or few large trees. In general the large tree are the ones wanted.
Products. Paper industry can use much smaller trees since they chip up the wood and make the paper so small tree are merchanable to them. The sawtimber industry needs larger trees to make boards so they will need large diameter trees and thus older trees.
This may not be what you wanted but this is a general answer to this question.
