white on my Orange tree bark

Question
My Orange tree is 3 years and it is only 4 feet high and did not produce any oranges last season. I now find white on my tree bark.  Is this a pest?  How can I treat it?
Thank You
E

Answer
Hi Elaine, Do not think the white on the bark is a problem it is probably lichens that do not harm the tree.  If you planted it from a small pot it could take three years just to grow.  If you are not watering it enough it could also slow down it growth.  Minimum watering 3/1/2 inches per week once established.  Three years in the ground is usually when plants really start to grow if you bought a 3 gallon plant.  If you opted for a larger size like a 15 or 25 gallon plant you would be eating fruit already, unless you are not watering properly.  kathy
