Robellini frost/freeze damage

Question
QUESTION: Our 4 legged  Robellini has suffered from the recent frost/freeze.  When should I trim off the brown leaves.

ANSWER: Hi Meebers, I would trim that which is brown, do not trim any green as it is still feeding your palm.  kathy

QUESTION: Thank you for your suggestion.  I live in Apopka, Fl, and are you saying I can trim them now?  or should I wait until later?  Also noticed some white scale on the "branches" what do you recommend to treat that.  I have sprayed them off with a garden hose in the past and applied a garden oil.  Tx again.

Answer
Hi Meebers, I would trim only that which would not protect the plant.  If the leaf is totally dead trim it up to the green if there is any.  Hopefully it still has green near the crown.  Any green left on the frond is still feeding the plant so do not cut that off.

For the scale, I would use Dyna Grow Neem Oil which does not wash off and is organic.  It is the only product I use at my nursery for over 10 years.  It builds up over time.  Hopefully in doing this now,  will protect it from a disease that is going around killing this family of palms.   Right now I do not know if they found a cure yet.  Our native cabbage palm is also in danger of extinction.  So some prevention is better than non.  Neem will not wash off for further protection. One thing to keep in mind is garden oils kill everything good and bad, as neem alters the taste so the good bugs live to eat the bad.... kathy
