QuestionJim,
I first discovered scales on my Hollyberry tree in Novato, Ca on 09/2007 and Clark's pest control came out and put a chemical solution down on the base of the tree and said it must be treated by the trunk absorbing the chemical and killing the scale from the inside. This treatment was repeated in the spring of 2008 and again on 09/2008. My question is how many treatments are needed since I have stopped them because I saw improvement ? I think I am beginning to see some dead leaves again. I am concern they may be starting up again. I don't want to loose this tree. Can I purchase something myself at homedepot or do I have to call Clark's pest control again at $150.00 a pop ? If I can buy it myself, what is the name of the product, how much and how long do I need to use it for.
Thank you for your expert advice,
Gilbert (Novato, Ca)
AnswerThe product to use is Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insect control. It is applied around the tree in the spring and the roots take the insecticide to the leaves and twigs and when the scales feed on the plant juices they are killed. You should be able to find it at a nursery/garden type store. Here is a web link to more information on this product. http://www.bayeradvanced.com/product/Tree-Shrub-Insect-Control/concentrate.html
