phomopsis galls

Question
On 12/1/2009, you kindly answered my question, suggesting the growth on forest trees might be phomopsis galls.  Someone else recently suggested Fusarium Canker with this link: http://www.nrs.fs.fed.us/pubs/jrnl/2012/nrs_2012_park_001.pdf  There aren't any pictures for comparison.  What do you think?

Answer
Sheri:

I learned to never say never, especially with plant diseases and the things that can cause them.  Phomopsis is more commonly associated with tissue outgrowths or swellings than Fusarium.  Fusarium typically can produce various symptoms including cankers ,root rots, blights and wilts.  A lab evaluation with asceptic isolations from symptomatic tissue is the telling thing. (sorry, i wasn't able to see the pdf at USDA because of the govt. shutdown affecting employees).

Steve
