Variegated Scheflera is planted in the ground by a inground pool in a sunny spot in Florida. Leaves are turning black.  The black can be washed off with soapy water. What causes this and how can I prevent it? It is very difficult to clean each and every leaf.

Hi Donna, you can spray the plant with an insecticidal spray.  I like 100 % pure Neem Oil as it is organic and does not wash off.  You will see a difference when the new leaves come out they will be nice and green again.  After that only spray new growth if the problem re occurs as the old leaves will still be protected.
