QuestionHi, I live in northern Kentucky and am having problems with yellow jackets in our weeping willow tree. The tree is approximately 8-9 years old and is at least 20 feet tall. It is very healthy, but just this year, we have had an invasion of yellow jackets. What can I do? Thanks for your expertise.
AnswerHi there. They are probably after something. The trees could be infested with aphids, mealybugs, scale insects, or a related insect. All of them secrete huge amounts of "honeydew," which is essentially liquid 'poop' rich in sugars that yellow jackets, other wasps, and flies crave. So, the yellow jackets have nothing to do with the tree!
Hope this helps,Bill
