QuestionHi, My young crape myrtle hardly flowered this year and has had brown laced leaves for a few months now. I live in San Jose, CA. Our yard is watered , but the tree is planted up in a scrub area, so does no get the amount of water the lawn gets. The tree was planted almost two years ago and flowered great last year. What can I do for it? Thank you. Suzanne
AnswerThe most common reason Crepe myrtles fail to bloom is a lack of sun. These trees need a lot of sunshine if you want them to bloom. Are there any trees nearby that may have grown up and around your Crepe myrtle and are blocking some sun?
The browning maybe from lack of moisture. Water with 1 inch of water per week place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop. This is called deep watering and should stop the browning.
