QuestionHello,
Does this fungus render the fruit unsafe to eat? What about any other fungi on apples? I think my problem stems from a juniper tree I have in the front yard which affects the apple tree. My peach tree and pear tree appear to be unaffected by this fungus which causes the black spots on the apples.
Thanks
Clyde
AnswerThe fungus is safe to eat. Just cut out the bad spots. It is my guess that the fungus is not cedar apple rust but some other fungal spotting disease such as bitter rot. In order to prevent this from happening again, you will need to treat the tree with a fungicide beginning in the spring and continuing to spray up to harvest. Maneb fungicide is good choice for fruit trees. Good Luck.
