Question
I have a fan palm in a pot and its several years old.  Jus recently it has sticky good on all of the leaves and trunk.  What can I do to get rid of it?

The plant has an insect infestation with a bug such as scale or aphids.  As these bugs feed they leave behind a sugary substance called honeydew on which a black mold will grow.  The sooty mold does not harm the plant but the bugs need to be controlled.  I would treat the plant with Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insecticide.  This product is mixed with water and poured on the soil around the base of the plant.  It is taken up systemically and will kill the bugs within a week or so.  It also provides protection from reinfestation for up to a year.  You can find this product at Home Depot.  It is good stuff.  Good Luck.
