hollow oak tree

Question
Have a hollow oak tree in back yard close to house but green foliage abundance and just hollow inside as I have punched away and can stick coat hanger inside pretty far.

Any home remedies U are aware of to treat any further problems or make tree better or not get worse.

Thank you

Answer
There are no effective treatments for heart rot in trees.  What you want to do is to make sure that water does not accumulate in the hole and cause further rot.  You can do a little shaping of the hole to accomplish this using a knife of small hatchet.  Try not to cut into the vascular tissue which would not be beneficial.  Trying to keep the area dry will slow down the rot and keep the tree alive longer.  Do not paint or cover the area with any substance as this causes the rot to move faster.  Keep an eye on the tree over the years and see if the rot proceeds to a point that the tree becomes a risk hazard.  At some point you will have to make a decision to cut the tree down.  You can also cut some of the top out to prevent wind throw.  I hope some of these suggestions help you make a decision.  Thanks.
