Pecan tree/scab fungal

Question
Since my last question to you about the problem with black splotches on the pecanshucks being scab disease, I forgot to ask what treatment should be used to stop this from recurring again. How should I treat this? Is there a simple solution to use?
Respectfully,
Ted Franek

Answer
There are a couple of fungicides that are effective against the scab fungus.  The question is whether or not you can treat the entire tree.  You will have to find a way to be able to spray all of the foliage.  If the tree is 30 feet tall, this may not be practical.  You may try using a pressure washer that will suck product into the line and see if you can get as far up the tree as you can.  A little fungicide will at least protect the nuts you can reach.  Daconil, Topsin M 70WP, and Maneb are all fungicides that you should be able to purchase.  The Daconil will be the cheapest and is a liquid which may work better in a sprayer.  It is also safe to you in case you happen to get some overspray falling back on you.  Wear long sleeved shirt and long pants and a cap and protect your eyes while making the application, and take a shower immediately after making treatments.  This is just standard safety stuff.  You will have to treat the tree every two to four weeks from April to the end of August to make sure you have good pecans.  I know all of this is real problem, but our commercial growers will make anywhere from 6-10 fungicide applications per year.  I wish you good luck.  Thanks.
