QuestionAbout a month ago, I noticed that my lilac bush was full of insect scales. Since I did not want it to spread to my other bushes, I dug it up and threw it away. However, the other day, I noticed that the scales have spread to the grass that was growing in the same area and under a crab apple tree. The infected grass is turning an orange-brown color and is dying. However, I have not found any scales on the crab apple tree, but I am sure it is infected with the insects. What can I use to kill the insect scales so that they do not continue to spread?
AnswerScales usually do not infest grass and are usually found on woody plant tissue. There may be something else going on with the grass as indicated by the orange color. Can you respond back with what type of grass you have. Bermudagrass and Zoysia are both susceptible to rust fungi which would cause a red or orange color on the foliage. To test for rust, grab a few grass blades and pull them through your fingers. The rust spores will come off on your fingers leaving them orange colored. If this is the case, a fungicide can be applied. A good yard mowing and collecting the clippings will usually get rid of it as well. Let me know what your find and I can recommend a control measure. If you still think it is bugs we can work on that too. Awaiting your response.
