QuestionQUESTION: i live in florida and have 2 sago palms in my front yard. for some reason over the past 2 years one of them which has 2 heads has stopped producing any leaves at all. we cut off one of the heads to see if that will help but it still wont grow any leaves now. i was told that if you don't cut dead leaves off, more will not grow back, is that true? can you tell me why it wont grow any more leaves and how can i fix the problem so it grows leaves, or is it dead and should just be replaced by another plant in my garden. please advise, i hope it can be saved.
ANSWER: Hi joann.. You do not mention any leaves at all or just no new leaves? If no leaves at all it may be dead. Sago palms have been dying off in Florida with a new disease that is going around, besides all the other diseases it can get. You need to be spraying this plant with insecticidal sprays to slow down the bugs that wreck havoc on this plant. Unless it has changed there will be no sagos alive in Florida if they do not figure out how to stop the new disease. If it still has some leaves and is not growing still spray and use a fertilizer higher in the first number to produce leaves for you.

QUESTION: it is not producing any leaves at all for 2 years now, even though we cut off the other head to see if any would grow. the other sago which is in the same garden on my front lawn is perfectly fine and producing many healthy leaves. so does that mean it is dead, or can i bring it back? the bark looks fine and i see no bugs or disease on it.
AnswerHi Joann...if it has not produced leaves in two years I would say it is dead unless you have some old green leaves on it then I would fertilize it with something like a grass fertilizer to get the leaves growing. No leaves at all, dead... Like I said previously there is a disease out there that is killing sagos so spray your healthy one to keep it alive.
