ponytail palm rot?

Question
Hi, we have recently had a lot of rain (a lot more than usual).  Since this time I have lost one ponytail to what looked like root rot (had lots of white "fuzz" in the root when removed from the soil and was really soft).  Now, I am noticing that another two ponytails are shedding the base leaves, they are turning a yellow / brown and can be pulled off easily.  This is what happened initially with the plant that I lost.  Is there anything I can do to stop this happenign again?  Should I take them out of the ground and into a pot for a while?  thanks heaps.

Answer
Once started, the rot will be hard to stop.  I would extrract the plants to a pot.  Use a light, well drained potting soil .  When you initially pull the plant out of the ground, wash the root system free of all soil.  I would then dip the root ball in a solution of fungicide before repotting.  You can make your own fungicide by mixing one tablespoon baking soda and one tablespoon of light cooking oil in a gallon of water.  Shake well to mix the oil and water.  Then dip the pony tail root ball in the mixture and let it sit there for 10-15 minutes before potting.  The baking soda mix has contact activity against fungal mycelium and will kill any it comes into contact with.  Of course it does nothing for that fungus already inside the plant.  This is the best we can do at this point.  I hope this helps you save the plant.  Good Luck.
