QuestionMy very old elm tree is dying. The bark is falling off every day and on the inside of the bark are strange markings, rather large, similar to a smashed spider (some are 4" in length). I have had them described as hieroglyphics. Please, can you tell me what is killing this old tree? This just started this spring as far as I know. Thank you so much.
AnswerThe markings you describe are most likely trails made by some bark beetle. The bark falling off the tree is not a good sign and if it comes off all the way around the base of the tree, the tree will likely die. There is not much that can be done in this situation. You can try to treat with an insecticide if it is not too late. I would treat the plant with Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insecticide. This product is mixed with water and poured on the soil around the base of the plant. It is taken up systemically and will kill the bugs within a week or so. It also provides protection from reinfestation for up to a year. This is a last ditch effort. I hope it is not too late to save the tree. Good Luck.
