I have peaches that are big and beautiful that are just ripening and look fine; but, when you cut into them they more often than not have a brown inside around the seed that looks like it is rotting from the inside starting at the seed. The variety is an Elberta variety and the location is central NC. I would like to know 1. What is this disease? 2. What causes it and what can be done to prevent it.

I too have a similar problem. I live in Southern California and have 2 peach,2 apricot and an apple tree. On of the peach trees bear good fruit. Follow the link below to see photos of the tree with the bad fruit.

AnswerIt looks as though the tree may not be getting pollinated properly. The pit looks OK but the flesh of the fruit is not developing fully. I do not see any evidence of insects as they would probably affect both peaches. If this tree always produces fruit like this, I would say it is a varietal problem with pollination. The tree may not be compatible with the other peach tree that is there. If they are both the same variety, this may be the problem. A different variety is sometimes needed for correct pollination. Sorry I can provide no better info than this. You may check the web for peach tree pollination and see if you can find a solution. Good Luck.
