QuestionQUESTION: I have a new Honeysuckle Plant (about 6 wks. old) which was a gift from a friend as a memorial to my sister, so it's VERY special to me. It's just coming into bloom, but the lower leaves are yellowing and have tiny black spots. I don't see any insects. It seems to be affecting the new buds, some of which are turning brown before opening. Any ideas?
ANSWER: Hi
Rub the black spots with your fingernail and see if they come off. If they do, this will be an insect. If they do not come off, there could be a fungal or bacterial leaf spot. Please respond back with your observations and I can provide a more definitive recommendation. Thanks.

QUESTION: They don't rub off - my guess is a fungus... we've had lots of rain in the last couple of weeks. Is there a way to tell the difference between a bacteria and a fungus? This morning I pulled back all of the mulch hoping this will give the soil a chance to dry out, if it's a fungus. By the way - I am grateful for your quick response. Thank you!!! Elaine

It is difficult to tell the difference without a microscope. I would go ahead and buy some Hi-Yield Copper Fungicide/Bactericide from garden center. Treat the plant according to label directions for ornamentals. Take the plant into a protected environment if possible and do not water overhead. Re-treat the plant in about 7-10 days and then watch for spots to develop on the new growth. If you see this, re-treat again. Good Luck.
