QuestionWe just planted a fruitless snow crabapple tree about 3 months ago.it is about 10 years old. It's right next to the lawn that has a sprinkler system. There are about 4 tree limbs that have died and have no leafs on it. what do you think is wrong with it? Is it not getting enough water?
AnswerIt is not getting enough water. A tree this large that is transplanted will under go a great deal of stress form the loss of roots. You need to water it twice a week say every four days with 1 inch of water-place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop. This is called deep watering. Also if you have not done so mulch around the tree to about three feet out from the tree with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk. This will help hold the moisture around the roots.
