mulberry tree - carpenter beetles

Question
Hi,
I moved into a home that has a medium sized mulberry tree. There are dead limbs that the carpenter beetles go into. The bark on one side of the tree has come off, leaving a very smooth surface and cracked tree.  Can I save it, how do I get rid of those bettles from their hole digging into the tree?  Please help :-)

Answer
Sounds like borer damage. I would spray the areas on the trunk with an insecticide called Merit. this will kill the borer under the bark.  Borers usually attack trees under stress--I would fertilize the tree with 10-10-10 fertilizer at the rate of 1 lb per inch of trunk diameter scattered around the tree and watered in good.
